Clams are bivalves, soft-bodied animals, protected by a strong two-part shell. They usually live buried in soft sandy or muddy sediments on beaches and in deeper subtidal waters. They can partially open their shells to extend a muscular "foot" which they use to pull themselves through the sediment.
