This condition occurs as the ice is forming (fall, winter, or spring, along the shore or floe edge), when some pieces of ice may break off and be forced on top of each other due to the influence of tide or wind; this condition can be dangerous when newly formed, but after these overlapping pieces have frozen together they become safe as they are thicker than the surrounding smooth ice and then are used for travel; similar to ivuniit, but qalirittinniit form with new, thinner ice, while ivuniit occurs with thicker ice in late winter.'
